"Outdoor GIENTAI" to support coronavirus (COVID-19) relief efforts

2020/4/17

Message from the founder and CEO of Montbell

I would like to express my condolences to the people affected by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
In the past, we have called for your support and assistance responding to natural disasters such as the Tohoku Earthquake, the Kumamoto Earthquake and the 2018 flooding. Due to everyone's efforts, we were able to contribute to those relief efforts.
This time, I am mobilizing Outdoor Gientai to help medical facilities, public health centers and municipalities that have been on the frontline combating the virus. I ask for your cooperation and it is my hope we can support our communities in any way possible.
Make no mistake this is a disaster, and this time we are all victims of the pandemic. It is everyone's responsibility to come together and support each other.

Activity Report (updated September 3rd 2020)

Outdoor Gientai's Response to Covid-19

At a recent routine medical check-up at Sumitomo Hospital, Montbell CEO and founder, Isamu Tatsuno was approached by a doctor friend that works at the hospital. The doctor explained to Tatsuno that they were in short supply of medical gowns.

After their conversation, Tatsuno began designing a medical gown and built a sample using the sewing machines at Montbell’s headquarters in Osaka. The gown is made with Tyvek, which was originally slated for use in the production of sleeping bag covers. Tyvek is being used because it is lightweight yet strong, and has excellent water resistance. Five sample medical gowns were made and sent for testing and feedback to Dr. Hayashi, who is headlining procedures at Sumitomo Hospital to prevent the spread of infection.

The design allows the user to remove the medical gown without touching any possibly contaminated fabric. Taking inspiration from Tibetan garments, the gown features strings in key locations, allowing the gown to be removed by simply untying the strings. After receiving Sumitomo Hospital’s feedback, a final pattern was created and 600 medical gowns will be produced at two Montbell sewing factories located in Japan. Since Tyvek is commonly used in the construction industry, we are currently trying to source a supply to make an additional 1,600 medical gowns.

In addition to these gowns, we are importing 30,000 medical gowns from China to donate to medical institutions that are in need of supplies. Outdoor Gientai also maintains a stockpile of outdoor clothing and gear for donating in times of natural disaster. We are currently coordinating with medical institutions if our stockpile of four to five thousand sets of rain jackets and pants can be used safely and appropriately as a substitute for medical gowns. If they can be used safely, they will be donated to institutions requesting them. A new face shield is also being developed and will be donated to medical institutions requesting them.

Outdoor Gientai started accepting donations on April 17th, to help those affected by coronavirus (COVID-19).
