Bike Family Nomads Foreword

In 2010, Céline and Xavier started their journey, getting on their bicycles and traveling the world to explore new environments, experience new cultures and meet local people. Over the years I’ve known about many people who have traveled the world by bicycle, but I’d never heard of anyone doing so while having and raising children.

I first met the Pasche family in Hokkaido at one of our events called “Sea to Summit.” The event has participants paddle through the sea, cycle across the landscape, and hike to the summit of a mountain with the goal of encouraging environmental awareness. The family took an interest in the event because of its similarities to the lifestyle they had chosen for themselves.

Born in Malaysia, their daughter Nayla was 3 years old when I met her. She was patient and brimming with curiosity. She had traveled across the burning desert of Australia and experienced the freezing tundra of Mongolia, managing to thrive and enjoy these adventures to the fullest. After her sister Fibie was born, Nayla took good care of her little sister and became a proud role model.

The girls learn reading and writing from their parents. They learn wisdom and courage from Nature. The day-to-day experiences on this “nomadic” journey have become an invaluable asset for them.

This great adventure led me to the honor of awarding the family the 9th Montbell Challenge Award.
Surrounded by Nature, people become artists. They become poets.

It is my pleasure to share with you, the stunning pictures and beautiful words the Pasche family have created on their journey.
